Dell introduced a sub-$500 server for small and medium-sized businesses.
The PowerEdge T100 is an affordable, easy to use product built as a first server for businesses looking to eventually deploy a networked server environment, Dell said. The new product focuses on what Dell says are the top "pain points" for SMBs: adequate data backup and security.
The PowerEdge T100 is powered by an Intel (NSDQ:
INTC) quad-core
processor and includes an internal locked-down USB 2.0 port, a chassis intrusion switch, and a
RAID architecture that can prevent data loss by performing scheduled data backups.
In addition, the system has up to 8 GB of memory and input/output technology and internal storage capacity of up to 2 TB. For easy access, the hardware has color-coded internal components. It also has a slim chassis and quiet system acoustics that make the computer storable on a desktop or closet.
Pricing for the T100 starts at $449. Other Dell products launched this year for the SMB market includes one and two-socket servers, direct attach storage, and iSCSI storage area network offerings.
Dell also offers an online product recovery and recycling service targeted at small businesses. Companies with fewer than 10 pieces of computer equipment can manage, return, and track unwanted equipment. The service costs $25 an item and is designed to help businesses safeguard their data, according to Dell.
When a customer returns equipment, Dell issues a detailed report of how a functional system's data was cleansed and how it was recycled.
